About Coach Alpha
After more than 10 years as a private tutor, 10 years as an author of young-adult literature, and over 800 school visits entertaining middle and high-school students … I’ve learned a lot about the teenage mind. More than anything, I’ve found one common thread: Generation Alpha, as today’s adolescents are known, face enormous challenges — academically, socially, emotionally — in a way that no generation has before.
While appearing as a guest on both The View and The Tim Ferriss Show, I mentioned that teenagers can’t face these hurdles alone. They need third-party intervention beyond their teachers and families to coach them to success. We could call this third-party “Coach Alpha” — a straight-talking, tough-love life guru, strategist, and humorist, who avoids didactic patronizing and warmed-over clichés, and gives them a clear, tested plan to improve their lives.
In the months following, I received over 300 responses from both kids and parents, asking how Coach Alpha could come to life. That’s when I realized that this mysterious figure wasn’t going to fly down from the sky like Mary Poppins.
I’d sounded the call.
Now I needed to answer it.
Welcome to the Coach Alpha Lab.
The lab consists of two 90-minute sessions.
Each 90-minute session features a fun, fast-paced presentation in the style of a TED Talk, complete with audiovisuals and a significant interactive portion, where we test strategies with individual attendees. The goal is to create:
empowerment
from learning strategies
community
from meeting other teenagers facing the same challenges
emotional catharsis
from a group connection
In Part 1, the Personal Story workshop, after demonstrating the key elements of a memorable college essay, we’ll workshop a few teenagers’ essays live on-stage and come up with that perfect first sentence.
In Part 2, the Future Path workshop, we’ll work through different paths of decision-making that will let you maximize your experience in college and beyond.
The price of tickets is $20 per session, which includes the course materials, or $30 for both.
